And, whether the students know it or not, they are collaborating, learning and having fun whilst doing so! Where can audio be used? Students think about the structure of the podcast. Secondly it gets students using other digital skills, i.e., recording and editing with purpose. This firstly gets students planning the structure of the content. Perhaps you have decided to create a weekly podcast or you have set a task for the students to create a weekly podcast together. It’s quicker to voice short soundbites and these can be uploaded or interspersed throughout a programme of teaching. There are YouTube tutorials available for these online and many of these editors are for Windows and MAC.īefore we consider the editing of audio, why do you want to record and where do you want to use the audio? Why record?Īs a teacher, recording yourself and voicing instructions, feedback, etc., can help motivate students to study. There are other audio editing applications available such as: Filmora, Audio Cutter, Ocenaudio, WavePad, GarageBand, etc. This blog post will demonstrate some basic editing techniques. It is a much finer grain than kosher salt. Salt: For baking, I always use table salt. You can also use almond or orange extract for a different flavor. Usually it’s made with vodka, but I love the flavor of bourbon vanilla extract. (I sometimes even “accidentally” add more than the recipe calls for.) I also love to make my own vanilla extract. Vanilla Extract: Vanilla and butter are the star of these cookies, so don’t skimp on the extract. Cornstarch can be found on the baking aisle of your grocery store. One of the key advantages of 650b wheels is that with like-for-like components they will be lighter than their 29in counterparts. The entry-level Evolution series also has a distinct lack of mid-stroke support, and while this makes it very easy to achieve full travel on every ride, it does nothing for your ride confidence when the fork plummets through all of its travel when landing a drop or having to negotiate a tight, steep switchback. Yes, the oversized 15mm quick-release and 32mm upper tubes ensure that it’s plenty stiff enough for good steering precision, even with 29in wheels, but there is a harshness to the action of the Fox fork that translates to a slight numbing of the hands. There was a time when the 120mm-travel 32 Float would have been a sign of excellence, but since the introduction of the CTD damper in 2012, Fox forks no longer carry the same cachet. It’s not just the frame design that’s unique on the Trek it’s the only bike on test to sport a Fox fork. So your first upgrade will definitely be a dropper post, and Trek provides Stealth routing to make it possible if that’s the way you want to go. There is one downside to the flattened seat tube design, though: you can’t drop the saddle more than an inch or two. Was it worth all the hassle? Well, it certainly looks amazing and the 442mm chainstays, while not being super-short, are shorter than on most 29ers. The final piece of the puzzle was to flatten the back of the seat tube to make everything fit together. This, in turn, has allowed the rear wheel to be tucked in nice and tight to the BB without scrimping on tyre clearance. Keeping the chainstay length in check was a priority for Trek when developing the Stache and, by switching to the stiffer bolt-through dropout design, the engineers have been able to retain the desired frame stiffness for tracking and power delivery while ditching the seat and chainstay bridges. The frame shares most design features you find on Trek’s full-suspension trail bikes, including a tapered head tube, ISCG tabs on the BB for fitting a chain device and 142x12mm rear dropouts the last of those isn’t commonly found on a hardtail - all of the other bikes on test this month have regular QR rear dropouts. First introduced last season, the Stache is billed as a trail-ready 29er hardtail designed to meet all the exacting demands of the modern mountain biker. Ultimately, Autumn In New York is a workmanlike product that offers occasional, small moments of satisfaction, but, as a whole, is apt to leave audiences wondering why they should care.Whilst everyone is naturally entitled to their own opinion, I was rather shocked to read the large number of negative comments about this film on the site. And she can't work around the crucial lack of connection between Gere and Ryder. She tries mightily to make the setting important, adding numerous shots of falling leaves and New York City streets and skyscrapers, but time and place come across as more of an afterthought than a necessary element. Admittedly, Chen is limited by her material and stars, so it's fair to say she does what she can with what she has been given. To say this is a step down is an understatement without the credits, no one would guess the two movies were the work of the same person. Her identity is eventually revealed, but far less is done with her character than should have been accomplished.Īutumn In New York's director is actress-turned-filmmaker Joan Chen, making her Hollywood debut behind the camera after helming the brilliant, haunting Xiu Xiu. Then there's a mysterious woman (Vera Farmiga) who shadows Will, watching him with an ambiguous expression that suggests she's more than a spurned lover. Does he love Charlotte, or is she merely a stand-in for her mother, whom he wronged? We never find out this element is dropped when it becomes inconvenient to the main storyline. For instance, there's a substantial subplot that poses that possibility that Will's interest in Charlotte may represent a transference of long dormant feelings he once had for her mother. If your eyes are dry at the end, it's because the central relationship doesn't work.Īutumn In New York is guilty of wasting a fair amount of potentially intriguing material. In the long tradition of half-baked tearjerkers like this one, we get lots of close-ups, picture postcard images (of - surprise! - autumn in New York), and shallow, meaningless dialogue. Girl is revealed to have a terminal illness that allows her to be more beautiful the closer she gets to dying. Boy (in this case womanizer restaurateur Will Keane, played by Gere) meets girl (virginal Charlotte, played by Ryder). The main story follows the obligatory romantic melodrama outline. Admittedly, there's nothing wrong with her performance - it's heartfelt and appealing - but this kind of work is unlikely to remove the tarnish on her reputation. But eight years of sporadic activity and bad choices have taken their toll, relegating her to formulaic roles like the one she's stuck in in Autumn In New York. A decade ago, when she was in her late teens and early 20s, she was on everyone's list of talent to watch, in demand by such prominent directors as Francis Ford Coppola (who wanted her for The Godfather Part III then got her for his version of Dracula) and Martin Scorsese ( The Age of Innocence). They're like two strangers who are awkward and embarrassed to be in one another's arms.Īs for Ryder, she's yesterday's girl - a once-hot property who has failed to live up to her bright promise. The Autumn In New York age chasm wouldn't be as obvious if there was evidence of chemistry between Gere and Ryder, but there is none. Gere, who will turn 51 this month (and looks about 10 years older than his actual age), seems incapable of appearing in a movie where his ego is not stroked by having a relationship with a younger woman. In reality, the distributor was trying to avoid making an open declaration of "no confidence." However, while Autumn In New York is nothing more or less ambitious than a two hanky melodrama, it's not nearly as bad as it could have been.Īm I the only one who is weary of seeing wooden actor Richard Gere involved in on-screen romances with women half his age? First, there was Julia Roberts, now there's Winona Ryder. The MGM execs countered with the disingenuous claim that the decision had nothing to do with their opinion of the movie's quality they didn't want critics revealing the "surprise ending" (for the record, there is nothing surprising about the ending). First, stars Richard Gere and Winona Ryder spoke out publicly against this move, claiming it was an insult to the integrity of their film (director Joan Chen wisely declined to comment). When MGM elected not to screen Autumn In New York for film critics, the decision touched off a minor controversy. |
